Read All Reviews Suyi is a highly skilled and compassionate physio who helped me manage a wrist/thumb condition that developed early postpartum. When I first saw her, the pain was so bad I could hardly use my thumbs โ€” not ideal when youโ€™re caring for a baby full-time! She was incredibly supportive, checked in regularly, and it was clear she genuinely cared about my recovery. Thanks to her guidance, Iโ€™ve regained so much function, am far more comfortable, and didnโ€™t need a cortisone injection. Iโ€™m so grateful for her help! MT Michele T Surry Hills The most knowledgeable physios ever! MC Melissa C Newtown Paulina is an absolute legend! I could hardly walk because of sciatica when I received my first treatment. With sessions (including acupuncture ๐Ÿ˜ณ) and following her prescribed exercise plan, I am looking forward to running and playing sports again. I am eternally grateful JM Jerry M Redfern Iโ€™ve been coming here for years and this is by far the best physio Iโ€™ve been to in Sydney. I sustained a lower back injury which left me feeling like my days of lifting heavy were gone, but Andy quickly diagnosed my problem and, through his holistic approach to rebuilding my muscle imbalances and inflexibility, brought me back feeling stronger and more confident in the gym than I was before. Most running assessments are a brief treadmill clip and some generic cues. Ours is a comprehensive clinical evaluation โ€” the same depth of assessment we'd give any injured patient. "Roughly 50% of runners experience an injury in any given year. Most of them are entirely preventable with the right biomechanical understanding." We combine a detailed running history, full physical examination, and multi-angle video gait analysis to build a complete picture of how you move โ€” and where the inefficiencies or injury risks lie. You leave with a personalised exercise and technique plan, delivered to your phone the same day. Not generic stretches โ€” targeted interventions for your specific patterns. ~50% of runners injured yearly โ€” most preventable IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU? Every type of runner benefits. You don't need to be injured, elite, or training for a marathon to get value from a running assessment. ๐Ÿ” Runners with recurring injuries Keep getting the same injury โ€” ITB, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures? There's a biomechanical reason. We find it and fix it. โšก Performance-focused runners Want to run faster or more efficiently? Small technique adjustments can meaningfully improve your economy and reduce your race times. ๐ŸŒฑ Beginners starting out Starting a running program? Get the foundations right from day one and dramatically reduce your injury risk as your mileage builds. ๐Ÿฉน Post-injury return to running Returning after a hamstring, knee, ankle or stress fracture injury? We ensure you come back safely and don't repeat the same pattern. ๐Ÿ… Marathon & event training Preparing for a half marathon, marathon, or trail event? Optimise your gait before your training load peaks. ๐Ÿ“‰ Runners who've lost confidence Had a bad injury and now running with fear? Understanding exactly what went wrong โ€” and correcting it โ€” restores confidence as well as biomechanics. HOW IT WORKS Your assessment, step by step. Here's exactly what happens during your running assessment session. 1 Running history & goal review We discuss your weekly mileage, training load, race history, current and past injuries, footwear, and what you're trying to achieve. Context shapes everything that follows. 2 Physical examination Muscle strength testing, joint range of motion, flexibility assessment, and identification of any imbalances or weaknesses that could affect your gait. 3 Video gait analysis We record your running gait from the front, side, and rear. We analyse foot strike, cadence, stride length, hip drop, trunk lean, arm drive, and more โ€” with frame-by-frame review. 4 Real-time feedback & cue corrections We share the video with you, explain exactly what we're seeing, and work with you in real-time to test technique adjustments and cues you can immediately apply. 5 Personalised plan delivered same day A targeted exercise program and technique cue list tailored to your specific findings โ€” sent to your phone via our app within 24 hours. After the running assessment they found my cadence was too low and my hip was dropping. Fixed those two things โ€” no shin splints in 6 months." LC Lisa C. ยท Redfern Recurring shin splints "Was training for my first marathon and kept getting ITB pain. The assessment identified a glute weakness I never knew I had. Fixed it in 3 weeks, ran the marathon pain-free." DW Dan W. ยท Glebe ITB syndrome / Marathon prep "Came back from a stress fracture and was scared of running again. The assessment gave me so much confidence โ€” I could actually see on the video that my technique had improved. Now running stronger than before." AK Amy K. ยท Surry Hills Post stress fracture return COMMON QUESTIONS Questions about your assessment. What should I wear and bring? Wear your normal running gear โ€” the shoes and socks you typically run in. Bring any previous injury records or imaging if you have them. We'll do the assessment on our treadmill so you don't need to worry about finding a spot outside. Is a running assessment covered by health insurance? Yes โ€” a running assessment is conducted by a physiotherapist and is claimable through your private health fund under physiotherapy. We have HICAPS on-site so you can claim your rebate on the spot. Do I need to be injured to get a running assessment? Absolutely not. Many of our best outcomes come from runners who aren't currently injured but want to understand their movement patterns and prevent problems before they start โ€” especially when ramping up training for an event. How long is the appointment? Running assessments are typically 60 minutes. This gives us enough time to cover the full history, physical examination, gait analysis, feedback, and plan without rushing. Will I get a copy of my gait analysis video? Yes. We review the video with you in the session and can share key clips. Your personalised exercise plan is sent via our app within 24 hours and includes your key technique cues. Ready to run better? Exercise as medicine. Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are university-trained allied health professionals who specialise in using exercise as a clinical intervention. They're not personal trainers โ€” they're qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of chronic conditions and injuries through evidence-based exercise prescription. At SPP, our AEP brings a rare dual qualification โ€” physiotherapy and exercise physiology in the same person. That means your rehabilitation and your exercise programming are always aligned, always evidence-based, and always designed around what your body actually needs. Whether you're managing a chronic condition, recovering from surgery, or simply trying to get stronger and move better โ€” exercise physiology is about making lasting, meaningful change through movement. WHO IS EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY FOR? Conditions we specialise in. ๐Ÿฉบ Chronic Disease Management Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, osteoporosis, and pulmonary disease โ€” exercise is one of the most effective treatments for all of them. We build programs that work alongside your medical team. ๐Ÿง  Neurological Conditions Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, and post-stroke rehabilitation. Targeted neuromuscular exercise therapy to improve mobility, coordination, and independence. ๐Ÿ”ช Post-Surgical Rehabilitation ACL reconstruction, hip and knee replacements, rotator cuff repairs. We bridge the gap between your surgeon's sign-off and safely returning to the activities you love. ๐Ÿ˜” Mental Health Conditions Exercise is one of the most evidence-backed interventions for depression, anxiety, and chronic fatigue. We design safe, progressive programs with your mental wellbeing front of mind. ๐Ÿ‹๏ธ Performance & Strength Goals Want to run faster, lift heavier, or simply move better? Our AEP's strength & conditioning background means your program is built like an athlete's โ€” not a generic gym plan. ๐Ÿฆด Cancer Rehabilitation Exercise during and after cancer treatment reduces fatigue, improves strength, and significantly supports recovery. We work closely with your oncology team to design a safe program. WHAT TO EXPECT Your session, step by step. 01 Comprehensive Health History Your AEP takes a thorough history โ€” your medical background, current medications, activity levels, goals, and any precautions. This is the foundation of everything that follows. 02 Physical Assessment A structured movement and strength assessment to identify your baseline capacity, any weaknesses or imbalances, and the appropriate starting intensity for your exercise program. 03 Tailored Exercise Prescription Your program is built around your specific goals and health status โ€” not a template. Physiotherapists diagnose and treat injuries and movement dysfunction, often using hands-on techniques, exercise, and manual therapy. Exercise physiologists specialise specifically in clinical exercise prescription for chronic conditions, disease management, and long-term rehabilitation. Our AEP holds both qualifications, which means your treatment and exercise programming are always integrated. Do I need a referral for exercise physiology? Private patients can book directly โ€” no referral needed. If you'd like to access Medicare rebates through a Chronic Disease Management (CDM/EPC) plan, you'll need a referral from your GP first. DVA patients also require a referral. Please call us if you're unsure which pathway applies to you. Can I claim exercise physiology through my health fund? Many private health funds cover exercise physiology under extras cover โ€” but the amount and eligibility varies significantly between funds and policy levels. We recommend calling your fund to confirm before your first appointment. We have HICAPS on-site for instant claiming. How is exercise physiology different from personal training? Exercise physiologists complete a four-year university degree and are registered with Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA). They're qualified to work with clinical populations โ€” people with chronic conditions, disabilities, post-surgical rehab, and complex medical histories โ€” where a personal trainer is not. They can also be referred by GPs and access Medicare billing. What equipment do you have on-site? Our strength & conditioning facility includes two squat racks, barbells, a full dumbbell rack, cable machines, and 500kg+ of plates โ€” enough to run a comprehensive progressive resistance program without needing to go to a commercial gym. We also have full Pilates equipment including three reformers, a Cadillac, chairs, and barrels. Is exercise physiology covered by NDIS? Yes โ€” exercise physiology is an NDIS-registered service. We accept self-managed and plan-managed participants directly. If you're agency-managed, please contact us to discuss your situation before booking. Not sure if this is right for you? • Dry Needling | Physiotherapy

Dry needling in Surry Hills to relieve muscle pain, reduce tension and improve movement as part of an evidence-based physiotherapy treatment approach. Home > Services > Dry Needling ๐Ÿ’‰ Dry Needling Release the tension. Restore movement. Dry needling is one of the most effective tools we have for releasing stubborn muscle tension, reducing pain, and getting stiff, painful tissue moving again โ€” often in a single session. Book Online 0423 538 057 HOW WE USE IT โœ“ โœ“ โœ“ โœ“ โœ“ Used by multiple therapists across the team Always combined with exercise & manual therapy Thin sterile stainless steel needles Targets myofascial trigger points directly Typically 15โ€“20 mins within a 40-min session GOOD TO KNOW โœ“ โœ“ โœ“ โœ“ No referral needed to book Tell us if you're needle-phobic โ€” we'll plan accordingly Minor muscle soreness for 24โ€“48hrs is normal Not the same as acupuncture 40 min Standard session length No Referral needed Multi Therapists trained 1st Session guarantee HICAPS On-site instant claiming WHAT IS DRY NEEDLING? Not acupuncture. Here's the difference. Dry needling uses thin, sterile stainless steel needles โ€” the same type used in acupuncture โ€” but the philosophy and target are completely different. While acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine and energy meridians, dry needling is a western, evidence-based clinical technique that targets specific muscle tissue. The needle is inserted directly into a myofascial trigger point โ€” a hypersensitive knot within a muscle that causes local pain and can refer pain elsewhere. The needle provokes a local twitch response: an involuntary contraction of the muscle fibres that breaks the pain-spasm cycle, increases blood flow, and allows the muscle to release. At SPP, dry needling is never used in isolation. It's always part of a broader treatment plan that includes exercise, manual therapy, and education โ€” because releasing a trigger point is only step one. WHO IS DRY NEEDLING FOR? When to consider dry needling. ๐Ÿ”’ Stubborn Muscle Tightness When stretching, massage, and manual therapy haven't shifted tight, restricted muscle tissue โ€” dry needling can often create the release that other approaches can't. ๐Ÿ”™ Back & Neck Pain Muscle spasm and trigger points are a major driver of both acute and chronic back and neck pain. Dry needling addresses the muscle tissue directly for faster pain relief and improved range of motion. ๐Ÿค• Headaches & Migraines Many tension-type headaches originate from trigger points in the upper trapezius, suboccipital, and cervical muscles. Dry needling these areas can significantly reduce headache frequency and intensity. ๐Ÿ’ช Shoulder Pain Rotator cuff irritation, bursitis, and impingement often involve significant muscle guarding. Dry needling reduces the muscular component quickly, allowing other treatments to work more effectively. ๐Ÿฆต Knee, Hip & Leg Pain From plantar fasciitis to ITB syndrome, Achilles tendinopathy to hip bursitis โ€” the muscular component of lower limb pain responds extremely well to dry needling. ๐Ÿƒ Sports Injuries & Recovery Athletes use dry needling to accelerate soft tissue recovery, reduce delayed onset muscle soreness, and manage the overuse injuries that come with high training loads. WHAT TO EXPECT Your first dry needling session. 01 Assessment First Your physio takes a history and assesses the relevant area before any needles are involved. Dry needling is always part of a broader assessment โ€” we need to understand the full picture before deciding where to needle. 02 What the Needle Feels Like Insertion is usually painless or a very mild prick. When the needle reaches a trigger point, you'll typically feel a deep ache or twitch sensation โ€” this is the local twitch response and is a good sign. It passes quickly. Most patients are surprised by how tolerable it is. 03 During the Session Needles are typically left in for a few minutes. Your physio may gently manipulate the needle to maintain the therapeutic effect. You'll usually feel the target muscle relax and the referred sensation ease during this time. Ready to book your first session? Available Monโ€“Fri 7amโ€“7pm and Sat 8amโ€“5pm. Let us know when you book if you have needle concerns. First Session Guarantee. If you don't feel improvement after your first session, your next one is on us. Book Online Now Call 0423 538 057 04 After the Needles The rest of the session will include manual therapy, exercise, or other treatment techniques. Dry needling is the start of the session, not the whole session. 05 Post-Session Soreness It's normal to feel some muscle soreness in the treated area for 24โ€“48 hours afterwards โ€” similar to the ache after a heavy workout. This settles on its own. Most patients notice meaningful improvement in pain and range of motion within 24 hours. CONDITIONS DRY NEEDLING TREATS Where it works best. ๐Ÿค• Headaches & Migraines ๐Ÿ”™ Back Pain & Muscle Spasm ๐Ÿฆ’ Neck Pain & Stiffness ๐Ÿ’ช Shoulder & Rotator Cuff ๐ŸŽพ Tennis & Golfer's Elbow ๐Ÿคฒ Carpal Tunnel & De Quervain's ๐Ÿฆด Hip Bursitis & Tendinopathy ๐Ÿฆต Knee Pain & OA Management ๐Ÿฆถ Plantar Fasciitis ๐Ÿƒ Achilles Tendinopathy โšก ITB Syndrome ๐Ÿ’ฅ Myofascial Pain Syndrome PATIENT STORIES What patients say after dry needling. "I'd had neck pain and headaches for three years. Two sessions of dry needling combined with some targeted exercises and they were almost completely gone. I genuinely couldn't believe it." R Rachel M. Chronic neck pain & headaches "I was terrified of needles but my physio was so calm about it. Barely felt anything going in, and then my shoulder โ€” which had been locked up for months โ€” just let go. Remarkable." T Tom W. Shoulder impingement "I'm a runner and had persistent calf tightness that was affecting my training. The dry needling released it in a way that foam rolling and massage never had. Back to full mileage now." A Amy C. Running โ€” calf tightness COMMON QUESTIONS Everything you need to know. Does dry needling hurt? Most patients are surprised by how manageable it is. Needle insertion is usually painless or a mild prick. When the needle reaches a trigger point, you'll feel a deep ache or brief twitch โ€” this is normal and actually indicates the technique is working. The sensation passes quickly. Mild muscle soreness for 24โ€“48 hours after is common. What's the difference between dry needling and acupuncture? Same type of needle, completely different philosophy and target. Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine โ€” it targets meridians and energy pathways. Dry needling is a western clinical technique targeting specific muscular trigger points based on anatomy and neuroscience. Our physios use dry needling as part of an evidence-based treatment plan. Who performs dry needling at SPP? Multiple physios across our team are trained in dry needling and use it as part of their treatment toolkit. It'll be mentioned in your initial assessment if your physio thinks it's appropriate for your presentation โ€” you'll always be asked for consent before any needles are used. How many sessions will I need? Most patients notice improvement after one to three sessions. Dry needling is rarely a standalone treatment โ€” it's used alongside exercise and manual therapy as part of a broader plan. Your physio will give you a realistic session estimate based on your specific presentation at your first appointment. Are there any reasons I can't have dry needling? Dry needling isn't appropriate for everyone. Precautions include needle phobia, pregnancy (certain areas), blood thinning medications, compromised immune systems, and skin conditions or infections in the target area. Your physio will screen for all of these during your assessment. If you have specific concerns, mention them when booking. Is dry needling covered by private health insurance? When performed by a physiotherapist, dry needling is typically claimable under physiotherapy extras cover โ€” it's billed as part of your physio session, not as a separate item. We have HICAPS on-site so you can claim your rebate on the spot and only pay the gap. Unsure if dry needling is right for you? Personal training, reimagined. Physio-led performance training combines the coaching expertise of a personal trainer with the clinical knowledge of a physiotherapist โ€” in a single practitioner, in a single session. It begins with a high-level physiotherapy assessment that maps your movement quality, identifies any injury history or physical limitations, and establishes a baseline for your program. From there, every session is designed around that assessment. Your physio designs and supervises your training with a level of anatomical understanding and injury awareness that no standard personal trainer can match โ€” because they're not just coaching you to perform, they're coaching you to perform without breaking down. This is Phase 3 physio โ€” the stage where treatment ends and long-term strength and resilience begins. โ„น๏ธ Note on insurance: Physio-led performance training is not claimable through private health insurance. If you'd like a session that qualifies for health fund rebates, book a standard physiotherapy or exercise physiology consultation instead. We'll always be upfront about which session type is right for you. WHO IS IT FOR? Built for people who've been through it. ๐Ÿ”ช Post-Rehab Graduates You've finished your physio, you're out of pain, and you want to get genuinely strong โ€” not just return to baseline. Performance training is Phase 3: making sure you're stronger than before the injury. โš ๏ธ Injury-Prone Exercisers You keep getting hurt in the gym or on the track. Something isn't right in how you move or load โ€” and a standard PT hasn't been able to figure it out. Your physio will. ๐Ÿฆด Complex Injury Histories Multiple injuries, surgeries, or a complicated physical history that makes standard programming feel risky. Performance training accounts for all of it from session one. ๐Ÿƒ Athletes Returning to Sport Cleared by your surgeon or physio but not yet confident to train at full intensity. The bridge between "cleared" and "actually ready" is exactly what performance training is designed for. ๐ŸŽฏ Performance-Focused Patients You came in for a physio problem but your real goal is to squat heavier, run faster, or move better in sport. Performance training is the extension of your treatment โ€” not a separate thing. ๐Ÿ‘ด Older Adults Training Seriously Strength training as you age requires careful loading and programming. A physio-led approach ensures you're training appropriately for your physiology โ€” not following a program designed for a 25-year-old. WHAT TO EXPECT How your first session works. 01 Physio Assessment First Before any training, your physio conducts a full movement and strength assessment. This maps your baseline, identifies any current limitations or injury history that needs to be accounted for, and establishes the appropriate starting point for your program. 02 Goals & Program Design Based on your assessment and your goals, your physio designs a personalised training program. This isn't a template โ€” it's specific to your body, your movement quality, and what you're working toward, whether that's returning to sport, getting stronger, or just moving better long-term. 03 Supervised Training Sessions Every session is supervised 1-on-1 by your physio. They coach your technique, adjust loading in real time, and monitor how your body responds. The performance training sessions meant I had a physio right there while I loaded the barbell. I'm squatting more than before the injury. That still blows my mind." M Marcus L. Post ACL โ€” performance training "I'd been to three different PTs and kept getting hurt. Two sessions with my physio-led program and they'd already identified three things that had been causing my recurring shoulder issues. Fixed in a month." P Priya N. Recurring shoulder issues "At 58 I wanted to start training seriously but didn't know how to do it safely with my hip history. The assessment at session one was more thorough than anything I'd had from my GP. The program has genuinely changed how I feel day-to-day." G Geoff W. Performance training โ€” 58, hip history COMMON QUESTIONS Everything you need to know. Can I claim performance training through my health fund? No โ€” physio-led performance training is not claimable through private health insurance. If you want a session with rebates, book a standard physiotherapy consultation or an exercise physiology session instead. Both can involve strength training and exercise prescription, and both are health-fund claimable. We'll always be honest about which session type is right for your goals. Do I need to have had physio first? Not necessarily. If you're coming from another clinic or have had prior treatment, your physio will review your history and conduct their own assessment. If you've had no treatment at all but want to start performance training, we'll assess you in session one and make sure performance training is the appropriate starting point โ€” if you need physio first, we'll tell you. What equipment do you have on-site? Our strength & conditioning facility includes two squat racks, barbells, a full dumbbell rack (up to heavy), cable machines, and 500kg+ of plates. We also have a full Pilates studio with three reformers, a Cadillac, two chairs, ladder barrel, and spine corrector. It's a genuinely well-equipped space for both rehabilitation and performance training. How is this different from just seeing a personal trainer? A physiotherapist has a four-year university degree in musculoskeletal assessment, anatomy, and injury management. They can identify movement dysfunctions, contraindications, and injury risk in ways a personal trainer is not qualified to. When your physio designs and supervises your training, they're doing it with a complete clinical picture of your body โ€” not just your stated goals. Can I do performance training alongside regular physio sessions? Absolutely. Many patients combine both โ€” physio sessions for treatment, and performance training sessions for supervised exercise. The advantage is that your physio has complete visibility across both: they know what they did in your treatment session and can program your training accordingly. Nothing falls through the gap. Is performance training suitable for older adults? Yes โ€” and for older adults, having a physio supervise your training is arguably more important, not less. Loading appropriately, managing joint health, and building strength safely as you age requires a more nuanced approach than a standard gym program. Our physios are experienced in programming for patients across all age groups and fitness levels. Not sure which session t ype is right for you? What happens in my first appointment? Your first appointment includes a thorough assessment โ€” your physio will ask about your history, symptoms, lifestyle, and goals. This helps us understand not just your injury but the bigger picture. From there, you'll receive hands-on treatment in the same session, along with a clear explanation of what's going on and a plan for recovery. We work through three phases โ€” Relief, Rehab, and Resilience โ€” so you know exactly where you are and where you're going. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated. What conditions do you treat? We treat a wide range of musculoskeletal and movement conditions, including: Back and neck pain (acute and chronic) Sports injuries โ€” muscle tears, ligament sprains, tendinopathies Post-surgical rehabilitation (ACL, knee/hip replacement, rotator cuff) TMJ / jaw pain and headaches Pre and postnatal physiotherapy / pelvic floor Running injuries and biomechanical assessment Chronic disease management (via Exercise Physiology) Neurological conditions (MS, Parkinson's, post-stroke) NDIS-supported conditions Not sure if we're right for you? Contact us and we'll give you an honest answer. What is dry needling and is it painful? Dry needling uses thin, sterile, single-use acupuncture needles inserted into tight muscle tissue (trigger points) to release tension and reduce pain. It is different from traditional acupuncture โ€” it targets muscular dysfunction rather than energy pathways. Most patients experience a brief twitch or mild ache during the technique, followed by a sense of release. The needle itself is very fine and the insertion is usually barely felt. Some mild soreness for 24โ€“48 hours afterwards is normal. Your physio will always discuss dry needling with you before proceeding and it is entirely optional. How many sessions will I need? It depends on your condition, goals, and how your body responds. Your physio will give you an honest estimate at your first appointment. As a general guide: acute injuries often resolve in 4โ€“8 sessions. Chronic or complex presentations typically require longer. We'll review your progress at regular intervals and adjust the plan accordingly. We don't believe in keeping people coming indefinitely โ€” our goal is to get you independent and moving well as efficiently as possible. Do I need to fill in any forms before my appointment? Yes โ€” you'll receive a consent and intake form when you book, which covers your health history, consent for treatment, and privacy acknowledgement. Completing this beforehand saves time so your session can start promptly. If you haven't received the form, please arrive 10 minutes early to complete it at the clinic. What is your first session guarantee? If you don't feel genuine improvement after your first session, your next session is on us. We stand behind our work โ€” every appointment. Can you treat children? Yes. For patients under 16 years, a parent or guardian must be present during the appointment. For patients aged 15 and over, written parental consent is sufficient if the parent or guardian cannot attend. The consent form must be signed by a custodian for any minor. Classes & Pilates. What's included, how classes work, and memberships. What's the difference between clinical Pilates and a regular Pilates class? Our classes are physio-led, which means every session is guided by a physiotherapist or qualified Pilates instructor with clinical training. Class sizes are kept small (maximum 1:3 ratio) so your technique and movement is actually supervised. This matters if you have an injury, a history of pain, or specific movement goals โ€” you're not just following along in a group of 20. How much do classes cost? Single class: $70 5-class pack: $325 (save 7%) 10-class pack: $610 (save 13%) We also offer memberships for regular attendees โ€” Silver from $59/week (1 class), Gold $112/week (2 classes), Platinum $150/week (unlimited classes + extras). See full membership details here. Do I need experience to join a Pilates class? Not at all. We have beginner-friendly classes and our instructors will work with your current ability level. We recommend starting with a 1-on-1 private Pilates session so your instructor can assess your movement and set you up for success before you join a group class โ€” but it's not mandatory. Can I attend a class if I have an injury? Often yes โ€” in fact, Pilates is one of the best things you can do during rehabilitation. Our physio-led classes mean we can modify exercises for your specific injury and monitor your movement throughout. If you're unsure, book a physio appointment first and we'll give you a clear picture of what's appropriate for your stage of recovery. Practical information. Getting here, parking, and what to bring. Where are you located? We're at Ground Floor, 103 Foveaux Street, Surry Hills NSW 2010 โ€” right in the heart of Surry Hills, close to Central Station. Get directions on Google Maps โ†’ Is there parking nearby? Street parking is available on Foveaux Street and surrounding streets. There is also a paid car park on nearby Devonshire Street. We're well-served by public transport โ€” Central Station is a short walk away, and multiple bus routes stop on nearby Elizabeth Street and Cleveland Street. What are your opening hours? Monday โ€“ Friday: 7:00am โ€“ 7:00pm Saturday: 8:00am โ€“ 5:00pm Sunday: Closed Early morning appointments from 7am are popular โ€” we'd recommend booking in advance if you need a before-work slot. What should I wear / bring to my appointment? Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated. For example, if you have a knee or hip injury, shorts are ideal. Bring any relevant imaging (X-rays, MRI reports), your referral letter if applicable, and your health insurance card for on-the-spot claiming via HICAPS. Do you use AI note-taking software? We may use AI-assisted note-taking software to securely capture and manage session notes. This helps ensure accurate documentation of your treatment. Your privacy is important to us. For full details on how your data is handled, please visit patientnotes.app/privacy-and-compliance. If you have any concerns, please speak with your physiotherapist before your session begins. Telehealth & online sessions. How our online appointments work and who they suit. How does a telehealth appointment work? You'll receive a secure video link before your appointment โ€” click it at your session time and you're connected directly to your physio. No app download required. Your physio will assess your movement visually, guide you through a physical examination, provide a diagnosis, and deliver a full exercise program โ€” all in real time. Your home program is sent via app within 24 hours, just like an in-person visit. Is telehealth as effective as coming in person? For many presentations, yes. Exercise prescription, rehabilitation programming, posture and movement assessment, chronic pain management, and clinical Pilates all translate very well to video. The honest answer is that some conditions genuinely need hands-on treatment โ€” if that's you, we'll tell you upfront rather than have you waste a session. If we can help you effectively via telehealth, we will. What do I need for a telehealth session? A device with a working camera โ€” phone, tablet, or laptop all work. A stable internet connection. Enough floor space to stand, bend, and move around. Wear comfortable clothing that allows movement and access to the area being assessed. If you have any existing scans or reports, have them nearby. That's it. Does my health fund or Medicare cover telehealth? Most private health funds cover telehealth physiotherapy at the same rate as in-person โ€” check your specific policy for your extras rebate. Medicare CDM/EPC telehealth rebates are available under certain conditions โ€” speak to your GP about whether your plan covers telehealth allied health. DVA and NDIS participants can also access telehealth โ€” call us on 0423 538 057 to confirm your specific entitlements before booking. Do I need to be in Sydney or Australia? You need to be in Australia for Medicare and health fund rebates to apply. Beyond that, telehealth works wherever you are โ€” we see patients across NSW, interstate, and in regional areas where access to a good physio is limited. If you're overseas, we can still consult privately โ€” call us to discuss. Booking & appointments Everything about scheduling, referrals, and session lengths. Do I need a referral to book? Is remedial massage covered by my health fund? Most extras health covers include remedial massage. The rebate amount varies by fund and level of cover. We have HICAPS on-site so you can claim immediately after your session โ€” you only pay the gap. What's the difference between remedial and relaxation massage? Remedial massage is clinically focused โ€” it targets specific areas of pain, dysfunction, or restriction using a range of techniques including trigger point therapy, myofascial release, and deep tissue work. Relaxation massage is a gentler, full-body treatment designed to reduce stress and promote wellbeing. Remedial is claimable on health funds; relaxation is typically not. How long should I book? For a full-body relaxation massage, 60โ€“90 minutes. For targeted remedial or sports work on a specific area, 45โ€“60 minutes is usually sufficient. If you're unsure, book 60 minutes โ€” it gives your therapist the time to do the job properly. Is pregnancy massage safe? Yes, when performed by a trained therapist. Our massage therapist is experienced in pregnancy massage and adapts positioning, pressure and technique accordingly. We recommend waiting until after the first trimester. Should I book massage alongside physio? For many conditions โ€” especially those involving soft tissue tightness alongside a movement problem โ€” combining massage with physiotherapy accelerates results. Your physio can advise whether it's appropriate for your situation. Not sure which session to book? The joint most people don't know they have. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sits just in front of each ear, connecting your jaw to your skull. It's one of the most complex joints in the body โ€” responsible for chewing, speaking, and yawning โ€” and when it's not working properly, the effects extend far beyond your jaw. TMJ disorders (TMD) can cause pain ranging from mild discomfort localised to the joint, all the way to severe widespread pain that radiates into the neck, head, and ear. Clicking, locking, limited mouth opening, headaches, and tooth grinding (bruxism) are all common presentations. Importantly, over 50% of TMD is muscular (myofascial) in origin โ€” meaning it responds exceptionally well to physiotherapy. You may not need a splint, a dentist, or surgery. You may just need the right physio to address the muscular and cervical contributors that other practitioners have missed. WHO IS TMJ PHYSIO FOR? Symptoms we commonly treat and resolve. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Jaw Pain & Clicking Pain, clicking, or grinding at the joint itself โ€” especially with chewing, yawning, or speaking. Often worse in the morning if you clench or grind at night. ๐Ÿค• Headaches & Migraines A significant proportion of tension-type headaches and some migraines originate from TMJ dysfunction and the muscles of the jaw, neck, and suboccipital region. Treating the TMJ often resolves the headaches. ๐Ÿ‘‚ Ear Pain & Tinnitus The TMJ sits immediately adjacent to the ear canal. TMJ dysfunction can cause ear pain, a sensation of fullness, or tinnitus that has no ear-based cause. Treating the joint often resolves the ear symptoms. ๐Ÿฆ’ Neck Pain & Stiffness The jaw and the cervical spine are intimately connected โ€” dysfunction in one commonly affects the other. Treating the TMJ and neck together is consistently more effective than treating either in isolation. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Limited Mouth Opening Difficulty opening your mouth wide โ€” for eating, dental visits, or yawning โ€” is a classic sign of TMJ restriction, either muscular or joint-based. Physio can restore normal range of motion in most cases. ๐Ÿ˜“ Bruxism & Teeth Clenching Teeth grinding and jaw clenching (bruxism) โ€” often during sleep โ€” overloads the TMJ and the muscles around it. Physio addresses the muscular consequences and can help break the clenching habit through targeted education and exercises. 50%+ Of TMJ disorders are myofascial (muscular) in origin โ€” meaning they respond directly to physiotherapy without needing dental intervention. 3 mo Conservatively managed TMD decreases pain, improves mouth opening, and resolves most presentations within 3 months of physiotherapy. = splint Recent systematic reviews show outcomes from physio (counselling + exercise) are comparable to splinting therapy โ€” even without seeing a dentist first. WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS Physio works for TMJ. Here's the evidence. Recent systematic reviews support treating the TMJ and the cervical spine together โ€” it is consistently more effective than treating either in isolation. The evidence is clear: jaw pain and neck pain are connected, and addressing both leads to better and faster outcomes. Importantly, if you haven't seen a dentist yet or had a splint made โ€” don't assume that's your only option . The research shows physiotherapy can produce outcomes comparable to splinting therapy. It's absolutely worth trying physio first. Our approach: we assess the jaw, the neck, the head posture, and all the muscular contributors to your presentation. We treat the whole picture โ€” not just the joint. WHAT TO EXPECT Your TMJ consultation, step by step. 01 Comprehensive History Your physio takes a thorough history โ€” when your symptoms started, what triggers them, whether you clench or grind, your sleep quality, stress levels, and whether you've had any dental treatment. All of these factors inform the assessment. 02 TMJ & Cervical Assessment The assessment examines the jaw joint directly (sometimes with a gloved hand, similar to a dental check), as well as your neck movements, head posture, and the muscles of the jaw, temple, and cervical spine. Both the joint and the surrounding tissue are assessed โ€” because both matter. 03 Diagnosis & Explanation You'll receive a clear explanation of what's happening and why. Is it muscular? Is the joint itself involved? Is the neck contributing? Are lifestyle factors driving it? Understanding the mechanism is the first step to resolving it. Ready to book a TMJ consult? For bruxism and clenching, this includes habit-awareness strategies and โ€” where appropriate โ€” a referral to a dentist for a splint if conservative physio alone isn't sufficient. PATIENT STORIES Years of jaw pain Resolved. "I'd had jaw pain and daily headaches for three years. Two dentists told me I needed a splint. Suyi identified that it was almost entirely muscular โ€” coming from my neck โ€” and within six weeks the headaches were gone." K Kate M. TMJ + chronic headaches "My jaw had been clicking and locking for two years. I assumed it was structural. Suyi's assessment was so thorough โ€” she found trigger points in muscles I didn't even know existed. Four sessions later, the locking is gone." A Andrew L. Jaw locking & clicking "I was grinding my teeth badly and had constant ear pain with no ear cause. Suyi treated my jaw and neck together โ€” the difference was noticeable from session two. I sleep so much better now and the ear pain has completely gone." N Natalie W. Bruxism & ear pain COMMON QUESTIONS Everything you need to know. What exactly is TMJ and how do I know if I have it? TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint โ€” the joint connecting your jaw to your skull. TMJ disorder (TMD) refers to pain or dysfunction in that joint or the surrounding muscles. Common signs include jaw pain or aching, clicking or popping when you open your mouth, difficulty opening wide, headaches around the temples, ear pain without infection, and teeth grinding or clenching. If you're experiencing any of these, a physio assessment can clarify whether TMJ is the cause. Can a physio actually treat jaw pain โ€” I thought that was a dentist? Both can help, but they treat different aspects. Dentists address the teeth and bite โ€” splints, occlusal guards, and dental alignment. Physiotherapists treat the muscles and joints โ€” the actual source of pain in over half of TMJ presentations. If your splint hasn't fully resolved your symptoms, or if your jaw pain comes with neck pain and headaches, physio is likely the missing piece. Many of our TMJ patients come to us after dental treatment that helped partially but not completely. What does TMJ treatment actually involve? Your first session includes a thorough assessment of your jaw, neck, and surrounding muscles to identify what's driving your symptoms. Treatment typically combines manual therapy to the jaw and cervical spine, dry needling to trigger points in the masseter and pterygoid muscles, postural correction, and a targeted home exercise program. Most patients notice meaningful improvement within 3โ€“6 sessions. Is jaw clicking always a problem โ€” mine doesn't hurt? Not always. Clicking without pain is very common and often doesn't require treatment. We'd recommend getting it assessed if the clicking is getting louder, more frequent, or starting to cause discomfort โ€” early intervention prevents it becoming a more significant problem. If it's painless and stable, watchful waiting is often perfectly reasonable. Can TMJ cause headaches and ear pain? Yes โ€” this is one of the most commonly missed connections. The muscles involved in jaw movement refer pain directly to the temples, behind the eyes, and into the ear canal. Patients often present thinking they have migraines, tension headaches, or an ear infection, when the actual driver is jaw muscle tension or joint dysfunction. If your headaches are worse in the morning or after eating, TMJ is worth ruling out. Do I need a referral to see your TMJ specialist? No referral needed for private patients โ€” you can book directly online or by calling 0423 538 057. If you're using a Medicare CDM plan, a GP referral is required.
